The earthly garden is a modern title. It is a triptych oil painting on oak panels painted by the early Dutch master Hieronymus Bosch from 1490 to 1510, when Bosch was between 40 and 60 years old. Since 1939, it has been housed in the Prado Museum in Madrid. People don’t know much about Bosch’s life or intentions. The interpretation of his intentions ranges from admonitions of secular carnal indulgence, to terrible warnings about the danger of temptation to life, to the arousal of ultimate joy. Over the centuries, the complexity of its symbolic meaning, especially the complexity of the central panel, has led to a wide range of academic interpretations. As for whether the central panel of the triptych is a moral warning or a lost panorama of paradise, twentieth century art historians have divided opinions. Bosch painted three large triptychs, from left to right, and each panel is important for the overall significance and can be read. Each of these three works presents unique and interrelated themes involving history and beliefs. I usually want to read the triptych of this period in turn. The left and right pictures often depict the Garden of Eden and the Last Judgment respectively, and the main theme is contained in the middle. It is not known whether the garden is intended to be used as an altar, but the general view is that the extreme themes of the inner center and right panels make it unlikely to function in a church or monastery, but commissioned by non-professional patrons.
