Hindsight is a funny thing when it comes to the Fallout series. Fallout 3, released in 2008, laid a new foundation for the development of open-world role-playing games in the West. Although Fallout: New Vegas has a Metacritic score of 93, some fans consider it the best in the series. The excellent performance of Fallout 3 frustrated Bethesda Game Studios, who felt that fallout 4's launch felt more like Fallout 3, but failed to innovate or deliver something fresh.
