"Wannabe" is a song sung by the British girl group Spice Girls, composed of lyrics and music by Matt Rowe, Richard "Beaver" Stannard, and the Spice Girls. The song was included in the Spice Girls’ first studio album "Spice", which was released on July 8, 1996, as the debut single of the Spice Girls.
On February 24, 1997, the song won the "Best British Single" at the British Music Awards.
One of the songwriters, Richard Stannard, met Melanie Brown, a member of the Spice Girls, at Lomis Studios in West London. Melanie Brown asked about Richard's creative achievements, so Richard played the song "Steam" composed for East 17. Melanie expressed her love for this song and invited Richard to compose a song for the Spice Girls. Richard then called in partner Matt Rowe. The two wrote this song and "2 Become 1" for the Spice Girls in ten days.
The "zigazig-ha" in the lyrics is a new vocabulary created by the Spice Girls. The song was composed in a small recording studio in London. This recording studio is shared by many artists, including a pop singer from the 1980s. The singer has a habit of smoking cigars in the toilet, so several creators called him "Shit and Cigars". This title was adopted by Melanie Brown, one of the writers of the lyrics, but the word was eventually replaced by "Zigazig-ah".
