Most people would think they need to measure the power of the shot so it can reach a danger signal. While this is a safe tactic, in most cases players need to be aware that the height of the shot also determines how much force needs to be used.
If the hole is downhill, the player should ideally use less force. Conversely, the uphill hole requires more power so that the ball reaches the hole instead of falling below the target line.
