If a tree in the forest falls and no one around hears it, will it make a sound?
No.
Not in my World.
When there are no players within a 128-block radius, the mob will automatically remove the pieces.
Similarly, thugs with no players within 32 blocks have a 2.5% chance of reducing chess pieces per second.
This is true for all monsters without name tags, except for some special monsters that have unique plunder timers.
Except for the villagers.
They are not limited by plunder timers unless there are any bugs.
They should not plunder themselves.
However, it can be exasperating that it can be difficult for them to survive until you get the hang of them.
Villagers may die in various ways.
They can be struck by lightning, become witches, be killed by the enemy, suffocate and starve to death.
The list goes on and on.
That is to say, the basic principle of keeping your voxel-based idiot alive is appropriately simple.
